News 12, the exclusive 24-hour news channel for Long Island and the tri-state area, has announced that Don Smith will be their new evening news anchor. Smith, who has been with News 12 for 15 years, will be taking over for retiring anchor Jim Dolan.
Who is Don Smith?
Don Smith is a familiar face to Long Island viewers. He’s been a broadcaster for more than three decades, most recently as the evening news anchor at News 12 Long Island.
Born and raised on Long Island, Smith has deep roots in the community. He’s a graduate of Northport High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University.
Before joining News 12, Smith was a reporter and weekend anchor at WCBS-TV in New York City. He also spent time at WNBC-TV, where he was a weekend sports anchor and reporter, and at WABC-TV, where he was a general assignment reporter.
Smith has won several Emmy Awards throughout his career, including two for his work on News 12’s “Long Island This Week.” He’s also been honored by the Associated Press and the New York State Broadcasters Association.
In his spare time, Smith enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters.
