Story 1

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Southern California on Thursday morning, the largest temblor to hit the region in 20 years.

The quake struck at 10:33 a.m. about 10 miles from Ridgecrest, a city of about 28,000 people northeast of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warnings were issued.

The temblor was felt as far away as Las Vegas and Mexico, and caused buildings to sway in Los Angeles and San Diego. It also knocked out power to tens of thousands of people in Kern County, where Ridgecrest is located, according to Southern California Edison.

USGS seismologist Paul Caruso said aftershocks are expected in the coming days and weeks and that some could be nearly as large as the initial quake.

##The FDA approved a new depression drug
The FDA has approved a new depression drug that is being touted as a breakthrough treatment. The drug, called esketamine, is a nasal spray that will be used in conjunction with an oral antidepressant. It is the first new antidepressant to be approved in decades and is seen as a major breakthrough for treating depression.

The drug works by targeting a neurotransmitter called glutamate. Glutamate is involved in brain communication and plays a role in mood regulation. Esketamine is thought to work by increasing levels of glutamate in the brain, which can improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression.

The FDA’s approval comes after two successful clinical trials that showed the drug to be safe and effective in treating patients with treatment-resistant depression. The trials involved nearly 1,700 patients who were given esketamine or a placebo alongside an antidepressant.

The most common side effects of esketamine include nausea, dizziness, headache, dissociation (feeling disconnected from reality), and increase blood pressure. The drug will only be available through a restricted program due to these side effects and will only be given to patients who have failed to respond to two other antidepressants.

If you or someone you know suffers from depression, talk to your doctor about whether esketamine could be right for you.

3. [breaking] FDA announces new regulations on e-cigarettes
The FDA has announced a new set of regulations on e-cigarettes that will go into effect in 30 days. The regulations will ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, require all e-cigarette products to be registered with the FDA, and prohibit the use of certain marketing practices that are known to appeal to minors.

The new regulations are being seen as a victory by public health advocates, who have been pushing for stricter regulation of e-cigarettes in light of the growing popularity of the devices among young people. However, some industry groups have already announced their intention to challenge the regulations in court.
