Fox News Channel was launched on October 7, 1996, under the ownership of News Corporation. The network began broadcasting its programming live throughout the day on February 6, 1997.
In July 1999, News Corporation sold a 20% stake in Fox News Channel to Australian media mogul Kerry Packer for $US150 million. Then in August 2005, Murdoch completed his purchase of full control of Fox News Channel when he acquired an additional 32% interest from Packer’s estate for $US355 million. Murdoch now holds 77% of voting shares in Fox News Channel’s parent company, 21st Century Fox.
On October 5, 2012, Rupert Murdoch announced that Roger Ailes would remain as CEO of Fox News Channel and Chairman of its parent company’s new television station group (which includes both the Fox Broadcasting Company and Fox’s cable networks) for another four years through 2016.
